SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION
PLANT DESCRIPTION (Botanical Identification) :-? A small, spiny, erect, undershrub. More or less glandular; branches slender, terete, triate, glabrous. Leaves opposite, 1-3 foliate; petioles very variable in length, from 3 – 30 mm long, deeply striate, very slender; stipules 2 pairs os sharp slender thorns, sometimes exceeding 12 mm in length; leaflets linear, acute, sessile or with very short petiolules.
Stem : The wood of the stem is white, very hard and covered with a ragged light brown bark which becomes shiny and mucilaginous when moistened. In transverse section, stem is more or less circular and striate. In less mature stem there is single layer of epidermis with a thick cuticle: unicellular and multicellular hairs are abundant. The multicellular hairs terminate in multicellular glands. The cortex is composed of 7-10 layers of cells. Outer cortical cells contain abundant chloroplasts.
