SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION
PLANT DESCRIPTION (Botanical Identification) :– Semi-aquatic, perennial, aromatic herbs, rhizomes horizontal, rounded, somewhat vertically compressed, spongy: leaves grass like or sword shaped, longer,slender; flowers small, yellow-green, in a spadix; berries green, angular, 1-3 seeded. Seeds oblong.
Rhizome is light brown with long internodes, root and leaf scars and soothing aromatic colour. Transverse section shows narrow cortical and large stelar regions. Cortex consists of thin walled parenchymatous cells arranged in chains leaving large intercellular spaces, sheathed collateral vascular bundles and bundles of fibres. Endothermal cells are barrel shaped and possess abundant starch grains. Mostly leptocentric and a few collateral vascular bundles in association with leptocentrics are observed in the ground tissue of cells containing dark brown oleoresin content and starch grains are scattered in the ground tissue of both cortex and stele.

- The root is used internally in the treatment of digestive complaints, bronchitis, sinusitis etc. It is said to have wonderfully tonic powers of stimulating and normalizing the appetite.
- Vacha Herb is a folk remedy for arthritis, cancer, convulsions, diarrhea, dyspepsia, epilepsy etc. Chewing the root is said to kill the taste for tobacco.
